Attic Insulation

Kusiak Construction has gained notoriety for its attic insulation, but it’s Kusiak’s origins as a roofer and roof repair company that make Kusiak the best choice for attic insulation. The key to saving money is retrofitting modern practices with your home’s insulation and ventilation system. Tossing insulation batts in the attic will do very little and may even cause condensation problems, mold, or respiratory issues. Of course, when you think of insulation, you picture the large rolls of pink fiberglass. This insulation is seldom effective in existing homes, especially with NWI’s bitter cold winters and extremely hot summers. Most homes in the region are under-insulated.

The practice of just rolling out insulation batts leaves huge gaps for heat to escape and even cause water damage to your home’s drywall. A roofer is uniquely qualified to work with the existing attic’s electrical, ventilation, and roofing systems. Without experience in retrofitting the new insulation into your home’s existing systems, your home’s modification can cause health, safety, and roof warranty issues.

GUIDE TO ATTIC INSULATION

Blown in Insulation

While Kusiak Construction uses all forms of insulation, one particular form of insulation called blown-in insulation (blow insulation) fits Northwest Indiana like a glove! Blow insulation ranks at the top for value, cost-effectiveness, and performance. If not enough, blow insulation can be retrofitted to your home’s existing construction and ventilation systems. This makes blow insulation a great choice for the typical Northwest Indiana home that may have been under-insulated when it was built. and needs to be optimized for our bitterly cold winters and scorching hot summers.

What is Blown Insulation? How it works! According to the article, Guide to Attic Insulation | Heat Cost Solutions for NWI, fiberglass blowing insulation is designed for thermal protection and noise reduction. It is ideal for open area attics as it creates a custom, uniform blanket that fills all of the nooks and crannies where heat can escape. It’s the perfect choice for Northwest Indiana’s extreme weather conditions and is equally effective in both summer and winter. It is also ideal for homes that are over ten years old and can be applied to existing attic insulation. While blown insulation seems to fit most attics like a glove, it is best installed by a company with knowledge of ventilation systems and capable of making modifications to your attic and roof.

Best insulation for attic | Kusiak recommends only using fiberglass blown insulation. It not only improves insulation value, but it is also a healthy choice for people with allergies and respiratory issues. Many contractors use low-quality cellulose. Cellulose is made from cellulosic materials like newspapers, hemp, cardboard, straw, and sawdust. Cellulose flattens and loses insulation value when it is introduced to moisture. It also creates dust and bacteria that can cause respiratory issues and allergies. Kusiak is a CertainTeed ShingleMaster Contractor, ensuring certified confidence in its insulation services.

Don't Hire an Insulation Contractor without This!

Simple Truths Every Homeowner Needs to Know about Insurance & Bonding

More and more people are learning to ask for a contractor’s proof of license, insurance, and bond. Thanks to the internet, people have learned to ask this significant question before hiring a contractor. It is often the first thing people ask. Unfortunately, asking a contractor isn’t enough! Most insurance requirements will leave you (the homeowner), responsible for everything from workman’s comp, personal injury, or responsibility for issues that exist long after the job is done. Let’s face it: things can happen, and you must protect your family and home. Would you drive a new car without insurance? Would you feel better if you had insurance, but coverage was limited to $1,000 on a new car that cost $30,000?

choosing the right contractor to insulate your home is a game changer when it comes to saving money

Unfortunately, the courts are filled with such cases. Contractors typically will only carry the minimum coverage required by city requirements. Hammond, for instance, only requires contractors to carry $100,000 per occurrence. This is not enough insurance to cover your home and other liabilities. Kusiak, on the other hand, carries $1,000,000 per occurrence. Why? Because it protects our customers and our reputation. Nothing is as important to us. Like yourself, we like to sleep well knowing everyone is protected. In addition, Kusiak is a licensed contractor. To learn why it’s important to work with a licensed contractor, see our License and Insured link.

Kusiak also protects you long after the project is finished. Typically, the homeowner assumes responsibility once the project is complete. For example, let’s assume you just had a new deck built, and the wood was faulty or compromised during construction. If you have a party and the deck collapses, you are liable for both the cost of repairing the deck and also liable for personal injury. This may not seem fair, but it is the law. It’s also why most contractors don’t carry insurance that protects you down the road. Kusiak, on the other hand, protects you and your home with $2,000,000 Products-Completed Operation Insurance (covers faulty work, bodily injury, property damage) and another $2 Million in workers comp insurance.

  • Ventilation Optimization – Your home’s insulation ventilation system is critical in choosing the best type of application and insulation. You may also have expensive heating and cooling bills. An estimated 15% of your home’s heat loss is because of under-insulated crawl spaces.
  • Pipe Insulation – Pipe insulation can help your home become more energy-efficient by reducing the amount of heat that you lose from your pipes and increasing the overall temperature of delivered water by several degrees. By insulating exposed pipes, you can also take several steps to winterize your home and prevent freezing when the weather turns cold. Pipe insulation can reduce pipes from sweating.
  • Air Sealing – The secret to keeping your family comfortable!  With improved insulation and air sealing, you can say goodbye to drafty halls in winter and stuffy rooms in summer. Our home improvement experts can support best practice air sealing without compromise to healthy breathing. Cutting down on drafts in your home will make your home much more comfortable.

WHAT IS R-VALUE?

R-value is the capacity of an insulating material’s resistance to heat flow. In short, this means the higher the R-value, the greater the insulating power of the material. While the R-value is good, it’s not a significant factor in determining desired outcomes. It’s also why insulation batts can’t hold up to blow insulation when it comes to insulating the attic of an existing home.

Since heat flows in and out through radiation and convection, the R-Value isn’t as significant as the. quality of the installation. Heat loss through convection, or airflow, can account for nearly 40 percent of total energy loss in the home. This is an issue if you are only using R-Value to choose your insulation.
